Greg Murphy has spent his time in Congress fighting to make North Carolinians’ lives harder. He voted to kick more than 46,000 North Carolinians off their health coverage by supporting the Big Ugly Bill, even though a hospital executive in his district said the cuts would create a “desperate situation for the people that work here, our patients and the entire community.” In the same vote, he passed the biggest cuts to SNAP in history, ignoring that more than 40,000 households in his district relied on the program. Murphy also worked to make life harder for seniors as a member of the Republican Study Committee. The group staunchly advocated for raising the retirement age, ignoring evidence that doing so would cost future retirees thousands of dollars every year. Murphy was an ardent opponent of the Inflation Reduction Act, calling it an “egregious proposal” and fighting to repeal the program’s drug price negotiation program that benefitted more than 300,000 North Carolinians. Murphy was a vocal supporter of DOGE, saying he was “delighted” the agency was addressing government spending and “really looked forward” to their findings. He praised Trump’s tariffs despite them contributing to “mega-layoffs” across the country, crippling North Carolina’s agricultural sector, and imposing a $1,000 tax on Americans last year. Murphy pushed extreme anti-choice views that put North Carolina women at-risk and was known to post offensive comments about women Democratic politicians. Murphy also opposed certifying the results of the 2020 election, claiming that state officials and judges in multiple states “usurped the legislative power to rewrite election law from thin air.”
- Murphy voted for a bill that would kick 17 million Americans off their health insurance, including nearly 12 million Americans off Medicaid. More than 46,000 North Carolinians could lose their health coverage because of his votes, and North Carolina’s Medicaid expansion was at risk of ending due to a lack of funding. A hospital executive in Murphy’s district said the Medicaid cuts he helped introduce would create a “desperate situation” for his constituents. Murphy even voted for the Big Ugly Bill after saying it was a “difficult pill for me to swallow” because he had to face people and “deal with the hospital issues that faced with cuts.”
- Murphy was a staunch advocate for repealing the Affordable Care Act. During his time in Congress, he has claimed the program was passed under “false promises” and “failed” to lower healthcare costs for Americans. Most recently, he opposed an extension of critical health care tax credits that help North Carolinians afford health insurance. As a result of the ACA enhanced tax credits expiring enrollment in North Carolina ACA plans fell 22.5 percent and premiums skyrocketed.
- Murphy, a doctor, claimed that he saw “plenty” of patients who “do not deserve to be on Medicaid.” He also claimed government intervention in health care was “destroying it.” He defended Medicaid cuts and said “there is places we can pare this down.” Asked about Republicans’ plans for $880 billion worth of cuts, Murphy claimed they wouldn’t all come from Medicaid and “there's going to be a lot of savings that are coming from other programs that are in that.”
Message: Murphy voted to take health coverage from North Carolinians to give billionaires tax breaks.
¶ Murphy voted for Massive Cuts To Medicare And belonged to a group that supported Raising The Social Security retirement Age
- Murphy, who claimed government intervention in health care was “destroying it,” voted for Republicans’ reconciliation bill, which the Congressional Budget Office estimated would trigger more than $500 billion in cuts to Medicare absent future congressional action. Muphy has also advocated for “substantial reform” to Medicare.
- Murphy was also a member of the Republican Study Committee, which staunchly advocated for raising the age at which seniors are eligible to collect Social Security. The Committee claimed the age increase was essential for keeping Social Security solvent, ignoring that a higher retirement age would cut the median-wage retiree’s benefits by thousands of dollars every year. The Committee also advocated for turning Medicare into a voucher system, which would raise health care costs for most beneficiaries.
Message: Murphy worked to make health care more expensive and less accessible for North Carolina seniors.
- Murphy called the Inflation Reduction Act, which lowered prescription drug costs and capped the cost of insulin at $35 per month for seniors, an “egregious proposal.” He specifically sought to abolish the IRA’s drug price negotiation program that more than300,000 North Carolinians who took prescription drugs were set to benefit from. Murphy previously voted against allowing Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug costs in 2019 and voted against a different bill in 2022 that sought to cap the cost of insulin at $35 per month.
Message: Murphy fought against cheaper prescription drugs for North Carolina seniors.
Message: Murphy voted to cut food assistance his constituents relied on to afford groceries, all to give tax cuts to billionaires.
Message: Murphy thought North Carolinians paying higher prices were evidence of Trump’s tariffs delivering “results.”
¶ Murphy Supported An Agency That Laid Off Federal Workers And Hamstrung Social Security
- Murphy was a vocal supporter of Trump’s “Department of Government Efficiency.” He said he was “delighted” by the agency and “really looked forward” to the agency’s findings. When DOGE came under fire for its indiscriminate layoffs of federal employees, instead of standing up for Americans’ jobs, Murphy said critics of the agency had “Musk Derangement Syndrome.”
- Despite all the time Murphy spent hyping up DOGE’s importance, North Carolinians suffered thanks to the agency’s actions. DOGE’s downsizing efforts affected the federal government’s ability to deliver services to seniors, and the mass layoff of federal workers crippled several of the state’s top research programs and nonprofits. More than 187,000 North Carolinians in Murphy’s district relied on Social Security benefits and more than 17,500 were employed by the federal government.
Message: Murphy “really looked forward” to eliminating his constituents’ jobs and causing seniors to wait longer for services.
Message: Murphy’s extreme anti-choice views put North Carolina women at-risk.
- Murphy voted twice to protect the accused pedophiles named in the Epstein files, and never cosponsored legislation or signed Rep. Thomas Massie’s discharge petition that called for the Epstein files to be released. Only after Trump signaled it was okay did Murphy vote to release the files.
Message: Murphy voted to protect the accused pedophiles named in the Epstein files until Trump signaled it was okay to vote to release the files.
- Murphy was a vocal advocate against certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election. He objected to certifying Pennsylvania’s electoral college vote, claiming that executive officials and judges in the state “usurped the legislative power to rewrite election law from thin air,” and signed an amicus brief calling for investigations into “irregularities” around the election.
Message: Murphy supported overturning the results of the 2020 election, he can’t be trusted to protect free and fair elections in North Carolina.
- On two different occasions Murphy posted inappropriate comments about women elected officials, then deleted the posts without apologizing. In response to a post Rep. Ilhan Omar made about the assailant who drove his car into a barrier at the Capitol, Murphy posted that it “would have been worse if they had been flying planes into the buildings.” After a vice-presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence, Murphy posted that Harris was only chosen as Biden’s running mate “for her color and her race.” When asked, Murphy said he meant the tweet to say that Harris was only chosen for her “color and gender.”
Message: How can North Carolinians trust Murphy to represent all of them fairly in Congress if he can’t even treat his colleagues with respect?
