Nunn voted for the House Republican budget framework, which directed the House Energy and Commerce Committee to make $880 billion worth of cuts. It has been widely reported that House Republicans would have to Medicaid in order to achieve that goal. More than 116,000 Iowans in Nunn’s district, or almost 17 percent, are covered by Medicaid or CHIP. Before he was elected to Congress, Nunn also defended Iowa’s privatization of its Medicaid system which was described as “fiasco,” reduced services and access to care for Iowans and created headaches for health care providers.
Nunn defended Trump’s tariffs, claiming more than once that they were “winning.” When asked about the tariffs an Iowa State University economics professor said, “we’re all going to be poorer.” There has also been reporting that the tariffs will hurt Iowa’s farmers, that it was affecting University of Iowa engineering students, and that Iowa homebuilders were concerned.
Nunn defended the Trump administration even though its policies resulted in major disruptions for Iowans and their jobs. Nunn declared that the American dream was alive and well under Trump, but Trump’s decisions were causing Iowans to lose their jobs and farmers to lose access to grants they needed. The Trump administration’s cuts have also resulted in layoffs, longer wait times, and frequent website outages at the Social Security Administration. More than 153,000 Iowans in Nunn’s district relied on Social Security benefits.
In 2022, Nunn expressed opposition to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that would bring billions of dollars for new projects, like repairing road and bridges to Iowa. Nunn’s opposition was especially troubling given, in 2021, Iowa was ranked number one for states with the largest number of bridges in poor condition by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association.
Nunn also opposed the Inflation Reduction Act, which allowed Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices for seniors and capped the cost of insulin at $35 per month for seniors. The Inflation Reduction Act benefited more than 88,000 Iowans.
