Ron DeSantis has signed a bill that bans most abortions after 15 weeks, making Florida the latest state to restrict access to the medical procedure. Just two days ago, Oklahoma's governor signed a bill that would make performing an abortion a felony in most cases. The new Florida law, which takes effect July 1, will replace a previous one that allowed abortions until 24 weeks of pregnancy.” [NPR, 4/14/22]

According to Physicians for Human Rights, “Another Florida obstetrician-gynecologist told PHR about having to wait weeks until a patient’s ‘kidneys [were] about to fail’ until they could offer pregnancy termination under the state’s previous 15-week ban: ‘I strongly remember a patient who had severe kidney disease … She was getting sicker and sicker….[We] had to bring it to the head people of the hospital and be like, ‘What are we allowed to do?’ And they were like, ‘She’s not sick enough yet.’ … …I think it took over two weeks for us to get an answer from the hospital administrators. …So that hit very strongly, because it was kind of insane that we had to wait for her to become sicker. We had to wait for her creatinine to bump and her kidneys to be about to fail before we were allowed to even offer her [termination]. Then we had to jump through so many hoops to be able to do it. According to an interview with Mike Beltran on Washington Watch, “BELTRAN: And we said, well, if we passed an abortion bill to restrict abortion and abortion went up in Florida because more people were coming from the rest of the South to Florida. And at that point we went from the most lenient state to still being the most lenient state despite passing a 15 week bill. Right. So the idea that Florida's some sort of an outlier, I think is absurd. I think that folks in the rest of the South and maybe people in the North are aggrieved that it's going to be a little bit harder to practice abortion tourism. And I make no apology for that. I didn't think we had to do that, but we did that. And then we have a whole bunch of exceptions which that should gratify the opponents of the bill that we had so many exceptions, I'm not sure that they were constitutionally required or that they were necessary as a matter of policy. But I don't think we're extreme at all. I think we're right there where the Florida voters are and where a lot of Americans are and where virtually every other state in our region, I'm telling you, got to North Carolina or Virginia, Right.
