Calvert voted for a bill that directed the House Energy and Commerce Committee to make $880 billion worth of cuts. It has been widely reported that House Republicans would have to cut Medicaid in order to achieve that goal. Then Calvert dismissed the concerns of his constituents about his vote and told them, “don’t panic.” 21 percent of Californians in his are covered by Medicaid or CHIP. Calvert has supported threats to Medicaid in the past. In 2017, he defended his vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which allowed for Medicaid expansion, and claimed he was fulfilling a promise to dismantle the law.
Calvert has defended Trump’s tariffs even though they were projected to harm businesses in the Inland Empire. Inland Empire economists said tariffs would affect the logistics sector in the region, which would have ripple effects on companies throughout the supply chain. Pacific Merchant Shipping Association said tariffs would affect everything from furniture to car parts and “everything you buy is going to either suddenly not be available or the price is going to go up.”
Calvert was so supportive of DOGE that he wrote an entire op-ed defending the effort and downplaying the harm it was causing across the country and in California. Calvert also provided a flippant response to constituents at his office who were protesting DOGE, saying, “it’s just another day in paradise.” The Trump administration’s cuts have resulted in layoffs, longer wait times, and frequent website outages at the Social Security Administration. More than 154,000 Californians in Calvert’s district relied on Social Security benefits.
Throughout his time in Congress, Calvert has become infamous for prioritizing himself over Southern California. 20 years ago he came under scrutiny for requesting earmarks and advocating for federal funding that was near his real estate holdings. Just last year, Calvert came under scrutiny for doing the exact same thing.
