Hinson supported numerous abortion bans including co-sponsoring legislation that would have been a total abortion and IVF ban as well as an Iowa heartbeat bill that was described as the most restrictive in the nation.
Hinson opposed Roe v. Wade, submitted a brief to have it overturned and claimed that it was rightfully overturned when the Dobbs decision happened.
Hinson Cosponsored The “Life At Contraception Act” Which Defined Life Beginning At “The Moment Of Fertilization” And Would Ban All Abortions. According to the Des Moines Register, “Democrats have criticized Hinson's record on reproductive health. The Bill Lacked Language Protecting Fertility Treatments. According to the Des Moines Register, “ Hinson is among dozens of House Republicans who have co-sponsored the 2023-24 Life at Conception Act. That bill states that life begins at fertilization. And although it includes language preventing ‘the prosecution of any woman for the death of her unborn child,’ it does not spell out protections for fertility treatments.” [Des Moines Register, 2/27/24]
The Bill Would’ve Threatened IVF Access. According to NPR, “ He's also one of the senators who co-sponsored the Life at Conception Act, a bill that would have granted constitutional protection to embryos at ‘the moment of fertilization.’ If enacted, that legislation could have threatened access to IVF, during which embryos are often discarded or stored for years.” [NPR, 3/16/24]
2018: Hinson Voted To Ban Abortions After A Fetal Heartbeat Can Be Detected. In May 2018, Hinson voted for Senate Bill 359. The bill, according to the Gazette, “would ban most abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, often as early as the sixth week of pregnancy and before many women know they are pregnant.” The House passed the bill by a vote of 51 to 46 and it ultimately became law. Hinson Voted For A Bill That Banned Abortion After 6 Weeks In Iowa. According to the Des Moines Register, “As a member of the Iowa House in 2018, she also voted for a bill that would ban nearly all abortions in Iowa after about six weeks of pregnancy. That version of the law was struck down in court, but after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned its Roe v. According to the Des Moines Register, “Under the legislation, physicians will be barred from performing most abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected. 2017: Hinson Voted To Ban Abortions After Twenty Weeks Without An Exception For Rape Or Incest And To Establish A Three Day Waiting Period For Those Seeking An Abortion. In April 2017, Hinson voted for Senate Bill 471. The bill, according to the Des Moines Register, “bann[ed] most abortions once a pregnancy reaches 20 weeks. It also establishe[d] a three-day waiting period for women seeking any abortion. Senate File 471 will allow an abortion after 20 weeks if doctors determine it's necessary to preserve the life or health of the mother. It does not include exemptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest, or for pregnancies in which a genetic anomaly makes life after birth impossible.” The House passed the bill by a vote of 55 to 42 and it ultimately became law.
