Hinson Claimed That To Keep Social Security Solvent, It Might Take “Tough Decisions.” According to the Iowa Starting Line, “‘My goal is to make sure it’s around. That may involve taking some tough decisions. You sent me to Washington DC to make tough decisions,’ Hinson said. ‘One of the things we’re talking about … our biggest plan, once we take the majority back, is to present not only a 10-year outlook for budgeting, but a 20-year outlook … A couple of years ago, Iowans had to make some tough decisions about our IPERS (Iowa Public Employees’ Retirement System) program here … It’s my goal that these programs are in existence long term.’” [Iowa Starting Line, 4/21/22]
Hinson Claimed That She Was “Open” to Raising The Retirement Age. According to the Gazette, “Congresswoman-elect Ashley Hinson is ‘open’ to changing the retirement age but says other steps must be taken to preserve Social Security for future generations of American workers. Hinson, who was elected in Iowa's U.S. House 1st District, a month ago said if changes are made to Social Security, they must be phased in to avoid creating hardships for retirees and soon-to-be retirees.” [Gazette, 12/11/20]
Hinson Claimed That The Age Of Workers Needed To Be Looked At. According to the Gazette, “‘But I think we need to be looking at the age of workers,’ she said. ‘If I know coming in — I'm 37 years old — if I know coming in I'm going to have to work longer, it's much easier for me to absorb that than to pull the rug out from someone who is 62 years old right now.’” [Gazette, 12/11/20]
Hinson Claimed That “Somebody Has Got To Be Willing To Make A Tough Call.” According to the Gazette, “That may not be a popular position, she acknowledged, but ‘somebody has got to be willing to make a tough call and that is exactly why the problem hasn't been fixed.’” [Gazette, 12/11/20]
Hinson That She Might Be “Roasted” By Both Sides For Being Open To Raising The Retirement Age. According to the Gazette, “‘I may be roasted on both sides for saying that I'm willing to be open to it,’ Hinson said, but she thinks that frankness helped her defeat incumbent Democratic Rep. Abby Finkenauer by about 10,000 votes in the 20-county 1st District.” [Gazette, 12/11/20]
