Grothman Introduced A Bill Classifying Single Parenthood As A Contributing Factor To Child Abuse. According to TIME, Grothman introduced Wisconsin Senate Bill 507 in 2012, which would have required the state Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board to "emphasize nonmarital parenthood as a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect." The bill applied to all unmarried parents, including same-sex couples. [TIME, 3/14/12]
- Grothman Said Single Mothers "Expect Government Handouts" And Called Benefits A "Bribe." According to the Madison Capital Times, Grothman described government welfare programs as "a bribe not to work that hard or a bribe not to marry someone with a full-time job" and blamed the government for "pushing the single parenthood lifestyle." Grothman Declared "Our Country Is Not Going To Survive If We Continue This War On Men." According to Salon, Grothman made the statement at a 2010 tea party rally while arguing against affirmative action policies. He also claimed that "gals" were "unfairly getting promoted ahead of men" when really "in the long run, a lot of women like to stay at home and have their husbands be the primary breadwinner." According to PolitiFact, when shown a study documenting that college-educated women earn only 80% as much as similarly educated men, Grothman responded, "You could argue that money is more important for men."
