Evans voted for a bill that directed the House Energy and Commerce Committee to make $880 billion worth of cuts. It has been widely reported that House Republicans would have to cut Medicaid in order to achieve that goal. More than 125,000 Coloradans in Evans’ district, or 19.5 percent, are covered by Medicaid or CHIP. Evans has previously said he believes “we need to go back to the drawing” board when it comes to the Affordable Care Act, which allowed states to expand Medicaid and provide health insurance to more Coloradans.
Evans has taken other votes against his district. When he voted for House Republicans’ March continuing resolution he also voted to cut all 2025 community project funding requests, which included money the Weld Food Bank in Greeley, CO was counting on.
Evans has defended Trump’s tariffs despite Colorado’s strong trade relationships with Canada and Mexico and the uncertainty Trump’s trade war has caused Colorado businesses. One construction company said Trump’s tariffs on Canada and Asian countries would have a major impact on them. Sentiment on the economy was at the third lowest point in 23 years in the Leeds Business Confidence Index because of Trump’s tariffs.
Evans has largely dodged commenting on the Trump administration’s cuts, layoffs and general chaos and its impact on Colorado, leading his constituents to protest him. He was silent even though the Trump administration’s cuts have resulted in layoffs, longer wait times, and frequent website outages that reduced services at the Social Security Administration. More than 100,000 Coloradans in Evans district relied on Social Security benefits.
During his 2024 campaign, at a congressional debate, Evans repeatedly refused to condemn the use of corporal punishment against kids in public schools. In March of 2023, when he was in the state legislature, Evans voted against a Colorado bill that banned the beating of children in public schools. He was also a member of a group called Heritage Defense, which believed parents had the right to exercise corporal punishment against children.
