¶ How To Win Against John Lujan
John Lujan has long pretended to be a moderate Republican but pledged that he would support Trump’s agenda if elected to Congress. In the last year, that agenda has included ripping health care from 17 million Americans, making the largest cut to SNAP in history, passing a bill that cut nearly $500 billion from Medicare, and impose far-reaching tariffs that have raised costs on Texans. Lujan won’t be an independent voice for Texas in the new 35th district because he has a history of showing that he’s just another self-serving politician. The best example being his support for Governor Greg Abbott’s agenda to funnel taxpayer money to private schools at the expense of public schools. Lujan defended Trump’s 2025 gerrymandering of congressional maps in the state – though such loyalty did not earn him the president’s endorsement. He was also accused of conspiring with Abbott in the 2021 Texas house district 118th special runoff election.
Lujan is also an anti-choice extremist who supported Texas’ near-total abortion ban that endangers Texas women. His views were so extreme that he even said if he had a daughter who was raped and became pregnant, he would tell her to carry the baby to term. He can’t be trusted to represent Texans in the new 35th district because he can’t pick trustworthy friends. He appeared to have a close relationship with San Antonio Councilman Marc Whyte who has been arrested for drunk driving, and who was twice reprimanded for violating the city’s ethics code. By his own admission, Lujan didn’t even vote in Republican primary elections between 1998 and 2006. If he can’t even bring himself to vote in important elections, how can Texans trust him to show up to vote on important issues in Congress.
¶ If Elected To Congress, Lujan Vowed To Support Trump’s Agenda Of Cutting Health Care And Food Assistance And Price-Raising Tariffs
- Lujan has vowed to support Trump’s agenda if elected to Congress. That agenda over the last year has included passing a bill that is estimated to kick 17 million Americans off their health insurance, including nearly 12 million off of Medicaid, the largest cut to SNAP in history, and a nearly $500 billion cut to Medicare absent future congressional action. That agenda has also included far-reaching tariffs that has resulted in higher prices and worsening job growth in Texas.
Message: John Lujan will not be an independent voice for Texans; he will be just another rubber stamp for higher prices and kicking Texans off their health coverage.
¶ Lujan Supported School Vouchers At The Expense Of Public Schools In Texas
- Until recently, Lujan had refused to take a position on school vouchers, but when it came time to stand up for public schools, Lujan failed them. He has supported Governor Greg Abbott’s push to allow taxpayer dollars to flow to private schools. In 2023, he sided with Abbott on an unsuccessful plan that sought to direct taxpayer money to private schools while holding public school funding hostage as leverage.
- Most recently, he voted for Abbott’s plan that rebranded vouchers as “education savings account” and provided $1 billion for families to claim in taxpayer funding to be used for private school tuition – the third and fourth tiers of the eligibility criteria would allow higher-income earners to claim the credit. Following the failure of his voucher agenda in years past, Abbott had spent millions of dollars supporting pro-voucher Republican candidates in the 2024 state legislative elections, including endorsing Lujan, in order to shift the votes in favor of his anti-public school agenda.
- Lujan has claimed to support public schools in the past but still supported school vouchers anyway and failed to help public schools when they needed him. Public schools in Lujan’s state legislative district, including his alma matter, have been forced to close due to budget shortfalls. Almost every single school district in the San Antonio area faced a funding shortfall after the Texas legislature did not use its $33 billion surplus to alleviate the public school financial crisis. One of the largest school districts in Lujan’s district was forced to close schools, but Lujan did not show up to important hearings to discuss the state’s funding position.
Message: Lujan voted to allow wealthy Texans to use taxpayer dollars to send their kids to private schools rather than working to fully fund public schools to provide a good education to all Texans.
¶ Lujan’s Anti-Choice Views Endangered Texas Women
- Lujan is an anti-choice extremist, who once said that if he had a daughter (he does not) and she was raped and became pregnant, he would force her to carry the baby to term. Lujan also supported Texas’ 2021 near-total abortion ban that did not provide exceptions for cases of rape and incest. 80 percent of Texans supported rape and incest exceptions to abortion bans and restrictions.
Message: Lujan’s anti-choice views endanger Texas women and were out-of-step with the majority of Texans.
¶ Lujan Was Just Another Self-Serving Politician
- Lujan has proven he will say and support whatever Republican party leaders want in order to get elected. In 2021, he was accused of conspiring with Governor Abbott during the Texas House District 118 special runoff election when he dispersed campaign literature that told voters the date of the election when it had not been officially announced yet. He also supported gerrymandering Texas’ congressional maps, a public desire of President Trump. His reasons for keeping the maps gerrymandered were poor, one being that he had already started raising money to run in the new TX-35 so it would be unfair if Texas reverted to the 2021 map, and the second being that he would not live in TX-35 if Texas reverted to the 2021 maps.
- Lujan has made it clear he'll change his opinions to fit his political ambitions. While running for TX-35, Lujan has said he will fully support Trump’s agenda if he gets elected to Congress and he has admitted to voting for him in the 2020 presidential election. However, in 2016, Lujan said Trump’s presidential campaign would hurt down ballot Republicans in Texas and he criticized the president’s tweeting in 2018.
- In 2006, he even admitted that he had not voted in a Republican primary since 1998 and that he was “more of a general election voter.” If he couldn’t even be bothered to show up to support Republican candidates in primary elections, how can Texans count on him to show up and vote in Congress?
Message: Lujan is just another self-serving politician who cannot be trusted as an independent voice for Texans in the new 35th district.
¶ Lujan Supported A Scandal-Ridden City Councilman
- Lujan supported scandal-ridden San Antonio City Councilman Marc Whyte. Lujan endorsed Whyte’s 2023 and 2025 city council campaigns and Whyte had endorsed Lujan in return. In 2023, Whyte was arrested for drunk driving and eventually pleaded “no contest” to “obstruction of highway,” receiving probation, community service, and a fine as a sentence. Whyte has also twice been caught violating San Antonio’s ethics code. In 2024, the San Antonio Ethics Review board found Whyte guilty of using his position for private interests and using city resources in a way that was not lawfully available to the public. In 2025, Whyte was sanctioned, formally reprimanded, and fined over accusations that he used city resources for political purposes.
Message: If Lujan won’t hold his friends accountable for wrongdoing, how can he be trusted to do the right thing in Congress?
