Failed gubernatorial and presidential candidate Perry Johnson built his campaign around supporting Trump’s harmful agenda, including backing the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which would strip health care from hundreds of thousands of Michiganders. While Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” would slash SNAP benefits relied on by Michigan families, Perry Johnson also denied Trump’s tariffs were raising grocery prices. Perry Johnson praised Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which also threatened clean energy jobs and projects across Michigan.Perry Johnson repeatedly praised Trump’s tariffs and urged Americans to “get behind tariffs,” even as they drove up grocery prices and hurt Michigan farmers, families, and small businesses. - In 2025, Perry Johnson supported Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which was estimated to kick 17 million Americans off their health insurance, including nearly 12 million Americans who rely on Medicaid. More than 424,000 Michiganders could lose their health insurance and hundreds of rural hospitals could close, including at least three hospitals in Michigan as a result of Trump’s tax bill. By 2034, 237,708 Medicaid recipients in Michigan were expected to lose their coverage under the “One Big Beautiful Bill.”
- In 2025, Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” also failed to extend enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies that were set to expire after 2025, contributing to rising premiums and fewer Michiganders enrolling in Marketplace coverage. As of January 2026, 40,000 fewer Michiganders signed up for Affordable Care Act Marketplace plans compared to the previous year amid rising premiums and expiring subsidies.

- In 2025, Perry Johnson supported Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which the Congressional Budget Office estimated would trigger $500 billion in cuts to Medicare.
- Perry Johnson also alluded to increasing the eligibility age of Medicare since Americans are living longer.

¶ Perry Johnson Supported Trump’s Devastating Tariffs
- In 2025 and 2026, Perry Johnson supported Trump’s tariffs and said they were “necessary” because the United States had faced “unfair” global trade relationships for years. While Trump’s tariffs were contributing to higher food prices, Perry Johnson denied they were raising grocery prices for Americans. As Trump’s tariffs were hurting Michigan small businesses, Perry Johnson said he “didn’t know” whether Trump’s tariffs were hurting small businesses, and claimed his multi-billion company was a small business. Trump’s tariffs were dooming Michiganders to a trade war, driving up prices, harming farmers and families.
- In February 2026, after the Supreme Court ruled that Trump exceeded his authority with global tariffs, Perry Johnson declared he “loved” Trump and urged Republicans to “get behind tariffs.” After the Supreme Court rejected Trump’s tariffs, Michigan businesses that paid $3.8 billion under the policy faced uncertainty over whether they would recover their money.

- In 2025, Perry Johnson supported Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which made the largest cut to SNAP in history.
- In 2026, Perry Johnson also thanked Trump for “lifting families off food stamps,” while nearly 575,000 households in Michigan relied on SNAP to afford groceries.

Perry Johnson also alluded to increasing the eligibility age of Social Security since Americans are living longer.

- Since the beginning of the Trump administration, clean energy projects that were projected to create hundreds of jobs in Michigan were cancelled or stalled.

¶ Perry Johnson Was An Anti-Abortion Extremist
- Perry Johnson was “unapologetically” an anti-abortion extremist, who believed life began at conception and supported a six-week abortion ban. Perry Johnson, a self-described “proud pro-life husband,” said he opposed abortion exceptions for rape and incest, and claimed “the right to life comes from God, not government.”

¶ Perry Johnson Sowed Distrust In The 2020 Election
- In 2022, Perry Johnson claimed there was “incredible fraud” in the 2020 presidential election.
- Perry Johnson also endorsed Matthew DePerno for attorney general, who tried to overturn the election and led efforts that gained unauthorized access to a Michigan vote tabulator while seeking evidence for Trump’s false election fraud claims.
Message: Perry Johnson pushed election conspiracy theories that undermined trust in Michigan’s elections.
¶ Perry Johnson Failed To Make The 2022 GOP Primary Ballot Due To Fraudulent Petition Signatures
- In 2022, Perry Johnson was removed from the Republican gubernatorial primary ballot after the Michigan Bureau of Elections determined that more than 9,000 of his petition signatures were invalid, leaving him below the 15,000 requirement to qualify. Petition circulators tied to Johnson’s campaign were accused of forging signatures, and Democrats accused Johnson of attempting to cover up evidence of the fraud. Perry Johnson had claimed he submitted nearly 23,000 signatures and that more than 15,000 were valid.
- Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said it was “incumbent on that candidate to make some level of inquiry” on whether submitted petition signatures were fraudulent. The Detroit News Editorial agreed that it “remains on the candidates who decided to submit the signatures.” The Michigan Bureau of Elections and Michigan Board of State Canvassers said they were “confident” the signatures were fraudulent and said there was “nothing to suggest that there are valid signatures in there.”
