Despite urging House Republican leadership to not make large spending cuts to Medicaid, Bacon voted for the U.S. House budget framework that directed the House Energy and Commerce Committee to make $880 billion in cuts. It has been widely reported that House Republicans would have to cut Medicaid in order to achieve that goal. Bacon initially claimed concerns about the proposed Medicaid cuts were “hysteria” but later admitted that $880 billion in cuts would affect Medicaid. Then in April 2025, Bacon said he would accept $500 billion in cuts to Medicaid. An estimated 78,600 or nearly 14 percent of Nebraskans in Bacon’s district relied on Medicaid or CHIP for health insurance.
Bacon has previously opposed legislation that provided affordable health care options to Americans. In 2017, Bacon said he was a “hell, yes” on repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act. Bacon also voted against the Inflation Reduction Act, but tried to take credit for its provision that capped insulin costs for seniors at $35 per month.
Bacon is also on record saying he supported raising the Social Security retirement age. In July of 2024, his campaign Twitter account also reposted a video of Ben Shapiro who said he supported privatizing Social Security and raising the retirement age. More than 105,000 Nebraskans in Bacon’s district rely on Social Security benefits.
In 2017, Bacon voted for the Trump tax cuts for wealthy Americans and big corporations. Bacon said his vote was “easy” because he supported reducing the corporate tax rate. In 2018, Bacon said corporations donated to his campaign because of his vote for the 2017 Trump tax cuts. In 2024, Bacon said he supported making Trump’s tax giveaways to the wealthy permanent. In 2024, the Washington Post also reported that Bacon said he would support Trump’s presidential bid even though “not everyone in his district feels the same way.”
ProPublica reported that in 2022, Bacon intervened to help a Trump Media employee “jump the line” to receive a hard-to-obtain foreign-worker visa. Bacon’s assistance reportedly came a couple weeks after Trump attempted to recruit a primary challenger against Bacon. A former Bacon aide reportedly claimed the request was not treated like typical requests from constituents and they did not want to help, but Bacon suggested she “needed to deal with it.”
