Van Orden promised that he could not cut Medicaid and that Americans would not see “a single nickel reduction” in their benefits. Then, he voted for a bill that would kick 17 million Americans off their health insurance, including nearly 12 million Americans off of Medicaid. More than 32,000 Wisconsinites could lose their health coverage as a result of his votes. Van Orden also put rural hospitals like MCHS Oakridge at risk.
Van Orden Claimed Americans Who Relied On Medicare, Medicaid, WIC, SNAP Or Veterans’ Benefits Would Not See “A Single Nickel Reduction” In Their Benefits. According to a Facebook Town Hall hosted by Rep. Derrick Van Orden, “VAN ORDEN: Last Congress, there was a group of people on the left saying that Republicans were going to cut Medicaid, said we were going to cut Medicare, said we're going to cut Social Security. They said we're going to cut SNAP. They said we're going to cut WIC. They said we're going to cut veterans benefits. And none of that came true. And the same people that lied to you about Republicans cutting Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, WIC, veterans benefits, they are the same people that are telling you the same lies now. And for me personally, I find it despicable when people are fear mongering with those most vulnerable: our veterans, our seniors, and hungry children. So there is nothing in the continuing resolution at all that cuts any of these programs. So if you are an American citizen and you're legally accessing any of these programs, SNAP, WIC, veterans’ benefits, Medicare, Medicaid, you're not going to see a single nickel reduction in your benefits, period. And anybody that's telling you anything else is lying to you.” [Facebook, Rep. Derrick Van Orden, 3/12/25] (video)
Van Orden: “We Are Not Cutting Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, WIC, SNAP Benefits, Or Veterans’ Benefits. And Anybody That Tells You We Are, They’re The Same People That Told You Two Years We’re Doing That And They Lied To You And They’re Lying To You Again." According to an interview Derrick Van Orden gave on the Vicki McKenna show, "VAN ORDEN: I want to say one last thing. We are not cutting Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, WIC, SNAP benefits, or veterans’ benefits. And anybody that tells you we are, they’re the same people that told you two years we’re doing that and they lied to you and they’re lying to you again." [The Vicki McKenna Show, 3/25/25] (audio)
2/25/25: Van Orden Promised That Medicaid And Social Security Would Not Be Affected By House Republicans’ Reconciliation Bill. According to an interview Derrick Van Orden did on the John Fredericks show, “VAN ORDEN: Well, let's make sure we understand what we're talking about so that in order, how Congress works, the rules that are set, we have to do a budget resolution that comes through the Budget Committee, chaired by Jody Arrington, who's a friend of mine, great dude, Texas guy. And what that does is it sets parameters like the Ag committee is supposed to get X amount of money, the Department of Defense is going to gain X percentage of cash. We're voting on that today. And there is not a single individual program that's listed in that budget resolution. And so all this stuff you're hearing from the Democrats, all the attack ads, everything this is going to sound shocking, is a lie. So there's not, you're going to cut this Medicaid thing or any of that stuff. Medicaid is not getting affected. Social Security's not getting affected. Right? But there's no individual programs listed in that budget resolution. This just sets targets.” [John Fredericks Show, 2/25/25] (video)
Van Orden: “I've Been Crystal Clear With The Leadership In The House Here. If During This Budget Reconciliation Process They're Going To Try To Cut Rural Health Care, I Am Not On Board.” According to a Facebook Town Hall hosted by Rep. Derrick Van Orden, “VAN ORDEN: So just because we live in rural areas doesn't mean that high quality health care should be rarely accessible to us. I have very, very few hard lines when it comes to these issues that we talk about regularly. One of them is this. That I've been crystal clear with the leadership in the House here. If during this budget reconciliation process they're going to try to cut rural health care, I am not on board. I will not be on board with a package that does, that if anybody is trying to cut any type of rural health care, it's just not going to happen on my watch.” [Facebook, Rep. Derrick Van Orden, 3/12/25] (video)
July 2025: Van Orden Celebrated Voting For The Final Republican Budget Bill, Claiming It Was A “Once-In-A-Lifetime Opportunity For Americans.” According to a press release from Rep. Derrick Van Orden, "Today, Congressman Derrick Van Orden (WI-03) released the following statement after voting to pass H.R.1 – the One, Big, Beautiful Bill: ‘This bill is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Americans – our seniors, veterans, families, farmers, manufacturers, and most vulnerable populations. ‘My Democrat colleagues have been fearmongering and pushing blatant lies from day one, and that ends now. When this beautiful bill reaches President Trump’s desk, Americans will see their taxes go down, wages go up, and integrity and stability restored in critical programs like SNAP and Medicaid. ‘This is what delivering real results for the people I represent looks like and what 77 million Americans and 1.7 Wisconsinites voted for.’" [Press Release – Rep. Derrick Van Orden, 7/3/25; H.R. 1, House Vote 190, 7/3/25]
2025: Van Orden Voted For The FY 2025 Budget Reconciliation Bill That Included $3.8 Trillion In Tax Cuts Offset By $1.5 Trillion In Spending Reductions To Programs Like Medicaid And The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. In May 2025, Van Orden voted for, according to Congressional Quarterly, “the bill that would provide for approximately $3.8 trillion in net tax cuts and $321 billion in military, border enforcement and judiciary spending, offset by $1.5 trillion in spending reductions, as instructed in the fiscal 2025 budget resolution (H Con Res 14). It would raise the statutory debt limit by $4 trillion and provide for increased spending on defense and border security, spending cuts on social safety net programs, such as Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. It also includes a mix of tax breaks for businesses and individuals; tax increases on universities and foundations; and a phase-down of clean energy tax credits. […] It would reduce federal spending on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program by requiring states to shoulder more of the cost, expand work requirements for SNAP, extend programs authorized under the 2018 farm bill, and prohibit the U.S. Department of Agriculture from increasing the cost of the Thrifty Food Program. As amended, it would cap state and local tax deductions at $40,000 for households with incomes below $500,000.” The House passed the bill by a vote of 215 to 214. February 2025: Van Orden Voted In Favor Of The House Republican Budget Resolution. According to a press release from Rep. Derrick Van Orden, "Today, Congressman Derrick Van Orden (WI-03) released the following statement after voting to pass the House Budget Resolution: ‘To be explicitly clear: today’s budget resolution did not include any cuts to specific programs. Anyone saying otherwise is lying and engaging in the fearmongering of our farmers, veterans, seniors, and most vulnerable populations. The budget resolution simply sets the framework for how the federal government can be better stewards of taxpayer dollars. ‘Millions of Americans depend on Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, and I will have no part in cutting these programs for the folks that are legally entitled to them.’" [Press Release – Rep. Derrick Van Orden, 2/25/25]
