¶ How To Win Against Brian Strickland
Brian Strickland’s tenure in the Georgia General Assembly reflected a record of opposition to Medicaid expansion, restrictions to food assistance, attacks on public education, anti-abortion extremism, and attacks against Georgians’ fundamental rights. Strickland repeatedly voted to make it harder for Georgia to fully expand Medicaid and previously voted to make Georgia non-compliant with the Affordable Care Act. Strickland repeatedly voted for anti-abortion legislation, including Georgia’s extreme six-week abortion ban. Strickland supported and voted for policies that would defund Georgia’s public schools and enable book bans. Despite warnings it was illegal, Strickland voted to impose drug tests for certain SNAP recipients. Strickland also voted to allow people to deny employment or services, including marriage ceremonies, to LGBTQ+ Georgians. Strickland voted for Georgia’s 2021 voter suppression law that restricted voting access in Georgia, predominantly affecting Black and minority voters. He also voted for a “crack down” on protesters that would “stifle” Georgians’ right to protest. Strickland’s support for Trump’s deployment of federal forces against Los Angeles residents raised questions about whether he would protect Georgians from Trump overstepping his authority.
¶ Brian Strickland Repeatedly Voted To Make It Harder For Georgia To Expand Medicaid
- As a member of the Georgia General Assembly, Brian Strickland repeatedly voted for measures that made it difficult for Georgians to access health care.
- After refusing to say whether he supported or opposed Medicaid expansion, Strickland voted for Governor Kemp’s “Patients First Act” in 2019, which allowed for a limited Medicaid expansion and imposed work requirements for recipients. The legislation allowed for the creation of Kemp’s Georgia Pathways to Coverage, which Kemp’s office acknowledged would leave more than 400,000 Georgians uninsured. As of March 2026, only 16,183 Georgians were enrolled in the program, less than the 90,000 that Kemp’s aides predicted for 2023-2024.
- In 2014, Strickland voted to require legislative approval before Georgia could expand Medicaid, rather than just the governor’s approval, and voted to prohibit the use of state funds to advocate for Medicaid expansion.
- In 2014, Strickland scrutinized liberals’ platforms for including “more Obamacare” and voted to make Georgia non-compliant with the Affordable Care Act and prohibit state and local agencies from creating a health insurance exchange or insurance navigator program. In 2026, more than 1.3 million Georgians were enrolled in Affordable Care Act Marketplace health insurance plans.

¶ Brian Strickland Supported Voter Suppression Laws
- After Biden won Georgia in the 2020 election and baseless claims of voter fraud spread across the country, Brian Strickland voted for legislation that restricted voting access in Georgia in 2021. Strickland touted championing “landmark integrity reforms” even though the election law changes disproportionately affected Black and minority voters. Georgia’s election law introduced more rigid voter identification requirements for mail-in ballots, restricted ballot drop boxes, restricted eligibility over provisional ballots, and criminalized offering water or food to voters waiting in line to vote.
- In 2021, the Biden administration sued to strike down Georgia’s election law, alleging it disproportionately affected Black voters. In March 2025, Trump’s Department of Justice dropped the lawsuit, but litigation continued through pro-voting and advocacy groups’ legal efforts.

- In December 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Trump did not have the authority to deploy National Guard troops in Chicago. Despite this ruling, Trump suggested he would “not hesitate to deploy troops in the future.” The Trump administration faced repeated legal challenges for overstepping its authority in deploying federal forces without the consent of governors and mayors across several American cities. In January 2026, Minnesota and Illinois sued the Trump administration over its deployment of federal agents to the Twin Cities and Chicago for immigration operations, arguing the unprecedented deployment of federal officers was a “federal invasion” and unconstitutional violation of the Tenth Amendment.
